What We Look For

Prior to launching Inhospitable Press, Shaun spent his career being insanely curious about t the ways humans interact with the systems around them.

Inhospitable seeks to amplify fiction and non-fiction writers telling stories about when humans are incompatible with the systems around them.

We’re especially interested in writers who can’t help but observe -- the ones who approach everyday life a little like anthropologists looking closely at the rituals, rules, incentives, workarounds, and weird little behaviors everyone else ignores.

Systems?

A system can be physical: trying to start a dead car.

It can be procedural: trying to move a policy through Congress.

It can be abstract: the impossible standards we create for ourselves.

Friction = the moment when a person looks at the world around them and thinks WTF!? Who is this serving?

If you’ve ever found yourself studying an ordinary situation and wondering why everyone has agreed to play by these particular rules, we’re interested in what you see.

We think there's a great book in that feeling.

What We Offer

Unless one is loaded, it's hard for new voices to find an audience.

Our imprint and team are focused on a theme and a standardized aesthetic for easy discovery.

We aim to stay a reader-centric press, and build a community of writers who eagerly cross-promote each other.
